Previewing Directly in your Browser

Previewing directly in your browser is helpful in many different cases. Opening pages in new windows (from "New Windows") and testing thumbnails (from "Advanced Thumbnails") are good examples. Running your site directly in a browser before uploading it will give you a more accurate idea of what it will look like once you put it on your server. That is extremely helpful where Netscape is concerned. However, this page is intended to show you how to view your site directly in a browser in order to test certain things you have used from this site.

Previewing in a browser is simply a matter of opening your browser, then using the "File" menu to browse to the wanted site's index page. It's really as simple as that!

The steps below will show you how to open your site directly in a browser. Internet Explorer and Netscape have slightly different names for the buttons, but the procedure is the same. Different instructions are provided for Internet Explorer and Netscape.

Internet Explorer

  1. Build your site for preview in Web Studio, then close preview.
  2. Open Internet Explorer.
  3. Click "File" in the top toolbar.
  4. Click "Open".
  5. Click "Browse"
  6. Click the arrow immediately to rhe right of the "Look In" drop-down box.
  7. Click the "C" drive.
  8. Double-click the "Sierra" folder.
  9. Double-click the "Web Studio" folder.
  10. Double-click the "Preview" folder.
  11. Double-click the folder of the site you wish to view.

NOTE: You will see folders in there having names you used when you saved your site to your drive ("Save as"). If you are trying to view a new site that hasn't been saved yet, double-click the "Untitled" folder.

  12. Double-click the "index" page icon.

NOTE: If you are building in both 3.2 and 4.0 HTML, you should still have an "index" page. Just click on that. If you are using a 4+ browser, the correct "first page" of the site will be loaded in your browser for you. If you are building in 3.2 and 4.0 HTML, I advise going to Site Properties from the page list, select 4.0 Only, save, build in preview again, then preview in your browser. This way you will not have duplicate HTML pages in your preview folder.

  13. Click "OK". The first page of your site will be loaded directly in Internet Explorer.

Netscape

  1. Build your site for preview in Web Studio, then close preview.
  2. Open Netscape.
  3. Click "File" in the top toolbar.
  4. Click "Open Page".
  5. Click "Choose File"

NOTE: The same notes apply here as in the Internet Explorer instructions.

  12. Double-click the "index" page icon.

NOTE: The same notes apply here as in the Internet Explorer instructions.

  13. Click "OK". The first page of your site will be loaded directly in Netscape.

That should do it for you!
